H.R. No. 1342 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The Bowden Chapter of Business and Professional Women held its annual fellowship breakfast on October 21, 2007, commemorating the organization's 65-year history and honoring L. Vernice Warner as the chapter's Woman of the Year; and WHEREAS, Created to support and celebrate women in their respective fields, the Bowden Chapter of Business and Professional Women has also promoted community service projects and a long list of local organizations and events since its founding in 1942; and WHEREAS, Woman of the Year L. Vernice Warner embodies the group's charitable ideals through her many efforts to give back to the community by helping others; in addition to her work with the Bowden Chapter, she has been a valued member of Emmanuel A.M.E. Church for more than 60 years, and the congregation has greatly benefited from her service as a trustee, steward, Sunday school teacher, women's day chair, and lay delegate to several Quadrangles; she has also attended the general conferences hosted by her church and shared her time with the Women's Missionary Society, which she serves as a life member; and WHEREAS, A native of Weimar, Mrs. Warner graduated from Douglas High School and attended St. Philip's College; while studying at St. Philip's, she met Artemisia Bowden, who served as her mentor and helped her earn a scholarship to the St. Agnes Hospital School of Nursing at St. Augustine's College; and WHEREAS, This accomplished Texan went on to earn bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Prairie View A&M University and pursued further studies at Our Lady of the Lake University; today, she is retired from a distinguished 33-year career with the San Antonio Independent School District and enjoys a lifetime membership with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; and WHEREAS, In recognizing the achievements of Mrs. Warner, members of the Bowden Chapter of Business and Professional Women honored a woman who has devoted many years to improving the lives of Alamo City residents, and this notable organization and its Woman of the Year are truly deserving of special commendation; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby honor the Bowden Chapter of Business and Professional Women for its members' 65 years of community service and congratulate L. Vernice Warner on being named the chapter's 2007 Woman of the Year; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
