| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The boys' basketball team of Slocum High School in |

| 6 | 6 | | Elkhart proved itself one of the finest in Texas by winning the |

| 7 | 7 | | University Interscholastic League 1A Division 2 state championship |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | on March 14, 2009; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Facing off against the team from Nazareth High |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | School in the title game at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Mustangs used their defensive skills to stymie their opponent and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | then took a commanding lead in the fourth quarter on their way to a |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | 45-27 victory; when the final buzzer sounded, Slocum had secured |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | the first basketball title in the school's history and did so in its |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | very first trip to the state tournament; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The Mustang attack was led by senior Jared Lane, who |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | scored 22 points and was named the Most Valuable Player of the title |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | game; the team's season-long march to the championship also |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | required vital contributions from the other members of the squad: |

| 20 | 20 | | Logan Foster, Kendell Redd, Jacob Bowman, Dillon Bickerstaff, |

| 21 | 21 | | Fletcher Larkin, Cole Lane, Steven Prater, Brody Sizemore, and |

|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, These talented student-athletes received valuable |

| 24 | 24 | | guidance from head coach Jay Bruce and assistant coach Barry Gill, |

| 25 | 25 | | who did an outstanding job of schooling the players in basketball |

| 26 | 26 | | fundamentals and inspiring them to give their all on the hardwood; |

| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Winning a state championship is the dream of every |

| 29 | 29 | | high school basketball player; by realizing that goal, the members |

| 30 | 30 | | of the Slocum High School team have brought great joy to their |

| 31 | 31 | | community, and they will forever treasure their memories of this |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | momentous achievement; now, therefore, be it |

| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 34 | 34 | | Legislature hereby congratulate the boys' basketball team of Slocum |
