 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, The boys' basketball team of Slocum High School in
 Elkhart proved itself one of the finest in Texas by winning the
 University Interscholastic League 1A Division 2 state championship
 on March 14, 2009; and
 WHEREAS, Facing off against the team from Nazareth High
 School in the title game at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, the
 Mustangs used their defensive skills to stymie their opponent and
 then took a commanding lead in the fourth quarter on their way to a
 45-27 victory; when the final buzzer sounded, Slocum had secured
 the first basketball title in the school's history and did so in its
 very first trip to the state tournament; and
 WHEREAS, The Mustang attack was led by senior Jared Lane, who
 scored 22 points and was named the Most Valuable Player of the title
 game; the team's season-long march to the championship also
 required vital contributions from the other members of the squad:
 Logan Foster, Kendell Redd, Jacob Bowman, Dillon Bickerstaff,
 Fletcher Larkin, Cole Lane, Steven Prater, Brody Sizemore, and
 Randall Thomason; and
 WHEREAS, These talented student-athletes received valuable
 guidance from head coach Jay Bruce and assistant coach Barry Gill,
 who did an outstanding job of schooling the players in basketball
 fundamentals and inspiring them to give their all on the hardwood;
 and
 WHEREAS, Winning a state championship is the dream of every
 high school basketball player; by realizing that goal, the members
 of the Slocum High School team have brought great joy to their
 community, and they will forever treasure their memories of this
 momentous achievement; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
 Legislature hereby congratulate the boys' basketball team of Slocum
 High School on winning the UIL 1A Division 2 state championship and
 extend to the players, coaches, and staff best wishes for continued
 success; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas
 House of Representatives.
