55 WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever cherish their
66 memories of Barbara Louise Stephen Davis of Galveston, who passed
77 away on February 23, 2009, at the age of 70; and
88 WHEREAS, Mrs. Davis was born March 25, 1938, to Weldon and
99 Alberta Stephen; a sixth-generation Galvestonian, she loved her
1010 hometown's colorful history, the diversity of its people and
1111 cultures, and the abundant beauty of the land, water, architecture,
1212 and wildlife that defines the city; and
1313 WHEREAS, After obtaining master's degrees in anthropology
1414 and education, Mrs. Davis devoted her considerable education and
1515 talent to the Galveston Independent School District, where she
1616 taught reading, bilingual education, ESL, and special education for
1717 35 years; and
1818 WHEREAS, This outstanding teacher was dedicated to educating
1919 the generations of students and adults that were privileged to
2020 learn from her in classrooms and tutoring sessions; she possessed a
2121 rare and inspiring ability to motivate and instill her love of
2222 knowledge and scholastic achievement; and
2323 WHEREAS, Sustained by her deep and abiding faith, Mrs. Davis
2424 moved through the peaks and valleys of her life with grace and
2525 dignity; a congregant of Trinity Episcopal Church, she was a lay
2626 chaplain in the Community of Hope, a labyrinth facilitator with the
2727 William Temple Episcopal Center, and an oblate in the Benedictine
2828 World Community for Christian Education; and
2929 WHEREAS, Mrs. Davis also volunteered her time to many local
3030 civic and community organizations, supporting activities of the
3131 Junior League of Galveston County, the Galveston Arts Center, and
3232 the Children's Center; and
3333 WHEREAS, Barbara Davis lived a caring and purposeful life;
3434 her thoughts and concerns were ever centered on the needs of her
3535 family, and her actions and words were always aimed at nourishing
3636 the hopes and dreams of those she loved; now, therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st
3838 Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Barbara Louise
3939 Stephen Davis and extend deepest sympathy to the members of her
4040 family: to her sons, Peter, Bret, Chris, and Sean; to her sister,
4141 Susan Williams; to her grandchildren, Toshi, Koto, and Kai; to her
4242 daughters-in-law, Carol, Naomi, and Ayesha; and to her other
4343 relatives and friends; and, be it further
4444 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4545 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
4646 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Barbara
4747 Louise Stephen Davis.
