| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The boys' varsity basketball team from the Sam |

| 7 | 7 | | successful 2008-2009 season by qualifying for the University |

| 8 | 8 | | Interscholastic League 5A playoffs; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, This exciting achievement was made all the more |

| 10 | 10 | | notable in that it coincided with the school's inaugural year of |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | implementing its new educational focus on math, science, and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | technology; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Head coach Demarcus Peterson provided sound |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | guidance to his players and helped them to meet the challenges of a |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | demanding season; under his direction, the team battled its way to a |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | fourth place finish in District 20, thereby earning its playoff |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | berth; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Winning with a true team effort, the Tigers received |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | important contributions from the entire roster, and each player |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | deserves recognition for outstanding play and exemplary |

| 21 | 21 | | dedication; and |

| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Leading the Sam Houston attack were three |

| 23 | 23 | | individuals who earned all-district honors; guard Arthur Smith |

| 24 | 24 | | averaged 21 points per game, was the sixth leading scorer in the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Houston area, and made the all-district first team, while point |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | guard Brian Elphage averaged 11 points and 7 assists per game and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | was a second team all-district selection; moreover, forward |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Marquise Christian led the Houston area in blocked shots and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | rebounds and averaged 14 points a game, and he was named to the |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | all-district second team; and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Though they ultimately fell to Kingwood High School |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | in the postseason, the Tigers may reflect proudly on a memorable |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | 2008-2009 campaign; over the course of the year, the team developed |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | into a mature and accomplished group of athletes, and the lessons |

| 35 | 35 | | they learned about teamwork and determination will serve them well |

| 36 | 36 | | in the years ahead; now, therefore, be it |

| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
