H.R. No. 1537 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The boys' varsity basketball team from the Sam Houston Math, Science, and Technology Center in Houston capped a successful 2008-2009 season by qualifying for the University Interscholastic League 5A playoffs; and WHEREAS, This exciting achievement was made all the more notable in that it coincided with the school's inaugural year of implementing its new educational focus on math, science, and technology; and WHEREAS, Head coach Demarcus Peterson provided sound guidance to his players and helped them to meet the challenges of a demanding season; under his direction, the team battled its way to a fourth place finish in District 20, thereby earning its playoff berth; and WHEREAS, Winning with a true team effort, the Tigers received important contributions from the entire roster, and each player deserves recognition for outstanding play and exemplary dedication; and WHEREAS, Leading the Sam Houston attack were three individuals who earned all-district honors; guard Arthur Smith averaged 21 points per game, was the sixth leading scorer in the Houston area, and made the all-district first team, while point guard Brian Elphage averaged 11 points and 7 assists per game and was a second team all-district selection; moreover, forward Marquise Christian led the Houston area in blocked shots and rebounds and averaged 14 points a game, and he was named to the all-district second team; and WHEREAS, Though they ultimately fell to Kingwood High School in the postseason, the Tigers may reflect proudly on a memorable 2008-2009 campaign; over the course of the year, the team developed into a mature and accomplished group of athletes, and the lessons they learned about teamwork and determination will serve them well in the years ahead; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the boys' varsity basketball team from the Sam Houston Math, Science, and Technology Center on qualifying for the UIL 5A playoffs and extend to the players, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
