No. 1538 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The boys' varsity soccer team from the Sam Houston Math, Science, and Technology Center in Houston made an outstanding showing during the 2009 season, qualifying for the University Interscholastic League 5A playoffs and advancing to the second round of play; and WHEREAS, Demonstrating a disciplined approach to the game throughout the year, the Tigers posted a regular-season record of eight wins, five losses, and three ties and earned a spot in the postseason for the second consecutive year; and WHEREAS, Sam Houston matched up against the team from Nimitz Senior High School in the first round of the playoffs; that thrilling contest stretched into overtime before the Tigers emerged with a 1-0 win, claiming the school's first playoff victory in soccer; they went on to play in the second round, where they fell to Elsik High School in a hard-fought game; and WHEREAS, The team's success in 2009 is a source of great pride to all of the students at Sam Houston and comes during the first academic year after the school was repurposed to place greater emphasis on math, science, and technology; by earning the right to contend for the state title in the playoffs, team members have provided a positive example of what can be achieved through dedication and hard work; and WHEREAS, These determined student-athletes benefited from the assured leadership of coach Robert Montiel, who not only schooled the players in on-field fundamentals but stressed the importance of academic studies and responsible behavior; and WHEREAS, A key element in the Tigers' winning season was its defense, which was anchored by Juan P. Ortiz and team captains Aaron Reyna and Sebastian Mireles; in recognition of his outstanding play, Mr. Ortiz was voted Defender of the Year by the 20-5A district coaches, and Edwin Mejia was voted as Co-Goalkeeper of the Year; in addition, all of the senior players on the squad provided vital guidance to their younger teammates, helping to forge the Tigers into a formidable team; and WHEREAS, With their inspired performances and dedication to excellence, the members of the Tigers soccer team enjoyed a memorable 2009 season, and they may take justifiable pride in a job well done; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the boys' soccer team from the Sam Houston Math, Science, and Technology Center on advancing to the second round of the UIL 5A playoffs and extend to the players, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
