5	5	WHEREAS, The boys' varsity soccer team from the Sam Houston
6	6	Math, Science, and Technology Center in Houston made an outstanding
7	7	showing during the 2009 season, qualifying for the University
8	8	Interscholastic League 5A playoffs and advancing to the second
9	9	round of play; and
10	10	WHEREAS, Demonstrating a disciplined approach to the game
11	11	throughout the year, the Tigers posted a regular-season record of
12	12	eight wins, five losses, and three ties and earned a spot in the
13	13	postseason for the second consecutive year; and
14	14	WHEREAS, Sam Houston matched up against the team from Nimitz
15	15	Senior High School in the first round of the playoffs; that
16	16	thrilling contest stretched into overtime before the Tigers emerged
17	17	with a 1-0 win, claiming the school's first playoff victory in
18	18	soccer; they went on to play in the second round, where they fell to
19	19	Elsik High School in a hard-fought game; and
20	20	WHEREAS, The team's success in 2009 is a source of great pride
21	21	to all of the students at Sam Houston and comes during the first
22	22	academic year after the school was repurposed to place greater
23	23	emphasis on math, science, and technology; by earning the right to
24	24	contend for the state title in the playoffs, team members have
25	25	provided a positive example of what can be achieved through
26	26	dedication and hard work; and
27	27	WHEREAS, These determined student-athletes benefited from
28	28	the assured leadership of coach Robert Montiel, who not only
29	29	schooled the players in on-field fundamentals but stressed the
30	30	importance of academic studies and responsible behavior; and
31	31	WHEREAS, A key element in the Tigers' winning season was its
32	32	defense, which was anchored by Juan P. Ortiz and team captains Aaron
33	33	Reyna and Sebastian Mireles; in recognition of his outstanding
34	34	play, Mr. Ortiz was voted Defender of the Year by the 20-5A district
35	35	coaches, and Edwin Mejia was voted as Co-Goalkeeper of the Year; in
36	36	addition, all of the senior players on the squad provided vital
37	37	guidance to their younger teammates, helping to forge the Tigers
38	38	into a formidable team; and
39	39	WHEREAS, With their inspired performances and dedication to
40	40	excellence, the members of the Tigers soccer team enjoyed a
41	41	memorable 2009 season, and they may take justifiable pride in a job
42	42	well done; now, therefore, be it
43	43	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
44	44	Legislature hereby congratulate the boys' soccer team from the Sam
45	45	Houston Math, Science, and Technology Center on advancing to the
46	46	second round of the UIL 5A playoffs and extend to the players,
47	47	coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for continued success; and,
48	48	be it further
49	49	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
50	50	prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas
51	51	House of Representatives.
