44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The boys' varsity soccer team from the Sam Houston
66 Math, Science, and Technology Center in Houston made an outstanding
77 showing during the 2009 season, qualifying for the University
88 Interscholastic League 5A playoffs and advancing to the second
99 round of play; and
1010 WHEREAS, Demonstrating a disciplined approach to the game
1111 throughout the year, the Tigers posted a regular-season record of
1212 eight wins, five losses, and three ties and earned a spot in the
1313 postseason for the second consecutive year; and
1414 WHEREAS, Sam Houston matched up against the team from Nimitz
1515 Senior High School in the first round of the playoffs; that
1616 thrilling contest stretched into overtime before the Tigers emerged
1717 with a 1-0 win, claiming the school's first playoff victory in
1818 soccer; they went on to play in the second round, where they fell to
1919 Elsik High School in a hard-fought game; and
2020 WHEREAS, The team's success in 2009 is a source of great pride
2121 to all of the students at Sam Houston and comes during the first
2222 academic year after the school was repurposed to place greater
2323 emphasis on math, science, and technology; by earning the right to
2424 contend for the state title in the playoffs, team members have
2525 provided a positive example of what can be achieved through
2626 dedication and hard work; and
2727 WHEREAS, These determined student-athletes benefited from
2828 the assured leadership of coach Robert Montiel, who not only
2929 schooled the players in on-field fundamentals but stressed the
3030 importance of academic studies and responsible behavior; and
3131 WHEREAS, A key element in the Tigers' winning season was its
3232 defense, which was anchored by Juan P. Ortiz and team captains Aaron
3333 Reyna and Sebastian Mireles; in recognition of his outstanding
3434 play, Mr. Ortiz was voted Defender of the Year by the 20-5A district
3535 coaches, and Edwin Mejia was voted as Co-Goalkeeper of the Year; in
3636 addition, all of the senior players on the squad provided vital
3737 guidance to their younger teammates, helping to forge the Tigers
3838 into a formidable team; and
3939 WHEREAS, With their inspired performances and dedication to
4040 excellence, the members of the Tigers soccer team enjoyed a
4141 memorable 2009 season, and they may take justifiable pride in a job
4242 well done; now, therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4444 Legislature hereby congratulate the boys' soccer team from the Sam
4545 Houston Math, Science, and Technology Center on advancing to the
4646 second round of the UIL 5A playoffs and extend to the players,
4747 coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for continued success; and,
4848 be it further
4949 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5050 prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas
5151 House of Representatives.
