| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Mary Russell is being recognized with a 2009 Lucy G. |

| 6 | 6 | | Acosta Humanitarian Award, presented by LULAC Project Amistad; and |

| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, An El Paso-based nonprofit organization, Project |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Amistad hosts the annual Lucy G. Acosta Humanitarian Awards banquet |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | to pay tribute to those individuals and groups that have |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | demonstrated exemplary efforts in serving the community; proceeds |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | from the event are directed toward the agency's client health and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | welfare fund, which provides vital assistance to senior citizens |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | and people with disabilities; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The founder of the Child Crisis Center of El Paso, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Ms. Russell set out in 1973 to create a safe haven for children, and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | today, her organization is an emergency shelter with more than 30 |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | beds for newborns and children up to 13 years of age; the Child |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Crisis Center offers intensive care management services, operates a |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Visitation and Exchange Center, and provides food, clothing, and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | furnishings to families in need, as well as parent and teen |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | education programs; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Through her compassion and dedication, Mary Russell |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | has helped to secure a brighter future for many Texans in crisis, |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | and she has set an example of civic leadership and volunteerism to |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | which all may aspire; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 27 | 27 | | Legislature hereby honor Mary Russell on her receipt of a 2009 Lucy |

| 28 | 28 | | G. Acosta Humanitarian Award and extend to her sincere best wishes |
