H.R. No. 1540 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Mary Russell is being recognized with a 2009 Lucy G. Acosta Humanitarian Award, presented by LULAC Project Amistad; and WHEREAS, An El Paso-based nonprofit organization, Project Amistad hosts the annual Lucy G. Acosta Humanitarian Awards banquet to pay tribute to those individuals and groups that have demonstrated exemplary efforts in serving the community; proceeds from the event are directed toward the agency's client health and welfare fund, which provides vital assistance to senior citizens and people with disabilities; and WHEREAS, The founder of the Child Crisis Center of El Paso, Ms. Russell set out in 1973 to create a safe haven for children, and today, her organization is an emergency shelter with more than 30 beds for newborns and children up to 13 years of age; the Child Crisis Center offers intensive care management services, operates a Visitation and Exchange Center, and provides food, clothing, and furnishings to families in need, as well as parent and teen education programs; and WHEREAS, Through her compassion and dedication, Mary Russell has helped to secure a brighter future for many Texans in crisis, and she has set an example of civic leadership and volunteerism to which all may aspire; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby honor Mary Russell on her receipt of a 2009 Lucy G. Acosta Humanitarian Award and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Russell as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
