| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Fort Settlement Middle School Band of Sugar Land |

| 6 | 6 | | has been awarded the 2009 Sudler Silver Cup from the John Philip |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Sousa Foundation; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, This accolade was established more than two decades |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | ago for the purpose of identifying and honoring exemplary junior |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | high and middle school concert bands; the Sudler Cup is the highest |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | prize for bands at this level, and it is given only to those |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | programs that have demonstrated excellence over a period of seven |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | or more years under the same conductor; while the selection process |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | focuses on the band's concert activities, the overall program must |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | be complete, and it must include participation in solo and ensemble |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | activities; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Led by Greg Countryman, the Fort Settlement band |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | program serves approximately 200 students, who are exposed to the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | fundamentals of characteristic tone production, music reading |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | skills, and individual technical development beginning in the sixth |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | grade; during the seventh and eighth grades, students audition for |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | placement in either the Symphonic or Honors Bands, through which |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | they continue to enhance their abilities; in addition to its |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | distinction as the only middle school band from throughout the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | United States and Canada to receive the Sudler Cup in 2009, this |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | noteworthy group has earned numerous awards at statewide |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | competitions; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Through hard work, dedication, and perseverance, |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | the Fort Settlement Middle School Band has built an impressive |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | record of achievement, and its outstanding efforts were duly |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | recognized by the John Philip Sousa Foundation; now, therefore, be |

| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 34 | 34 | | Legislature hereby congratulate the Fort Settlement Middle School |

| 35 | 35 | | Band on its receipt of the 2009 Sudler Silver Cup and extend to Greg |
