H.R. No. 1632 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The Fort Settlement Middle School Band of Sugar Land has been awarded the 2009 Sudler Silver Cup from the John Philip Sousa Foundation; and WHEREAS, This accolade was established more than two decades ago for the purpose of identifying and honoring exemplary junior high and middle school concert bands; the Sudler Cup is the highest prize for bands at this level, and it is given only to those programs that have demonstrated excellence over a period of seven or more years under the same conductor; while the selection process focuses on the band's concert activities, the overall program must be complete, and it must include participation in solo and ensemble activities; and WHEREAS, Led by Greg Countryman, the Fort Settlement band program serves approximately 200 students, who are exposed to the fundamentals of characteristic tone production, music reading skills, and individual technical development beginning in the sixth grade; during the seventh and eighth grades, students audition for placement in either the Symphonic or Honors Bands, through which they continue to enhance their abilities; in addition to its distinction as the only middle school band from throughout the United States and Canada to receive the Sudler Cup in 2009, this noteworthy group has earned numerous awards at statewide competitions; and WHEREAS, Through hard work, dedication, and perseverance, the Fort Settlement Middle School Band has built an impressive record of achievement, and its outstanding efforts were duly recognized by the John Philip Sousa Foundation; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the Fort Settlement Middle School Band on its receipt of the 2009 Sudler Silver Cup and extend to Greg Countryman and the band members sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Fort Settlement Middle School Band as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
