44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Residents of Waco lost a beloved neighbor and
66 esteemed civic leader with the passing of John D. Cabaniss on March
77 6, 2009, at the age of 89; and
88 WHEREAS, A native of Bell County, John Cabaniss was born on
99 October 3, 1919, to William Lycentus and Allie Herrington Cabaniss;
1010 he graduated from Moody High School in 1938 and served with the U.S.
1111 Army before attending The University of Texas and Baylor
1212 University; and
1313 WHEREAS, Mr. Cabaniss earned his law degree from Baylor, and
1414 his hard work and dedication as an attorney earned him the lasting
1515 respect of his peers; in 1959, he was appointed justice of the peace
1616 for Precinct 1, Place 1 in McLennan County, and over the course of
1717 his notable 42-year tenure, he performed nearly 5,000 marriage
1818 ceremonies and enjoyed close friendships with his courthouse
1919 coworkers; and
2020 WHEREAS, Devoted to his family, Mr. Cabaniss shared 47 years
2121 with his wife, Dorothy, and he lovingly helped to raise her sons,
2222 Charlie and Mark; he was an advocate of education, and his
2323 encouragement led his stepsons to pursue an M.D. and J.D.,
2424 respectively; and
2525 WHEREAS, Known for his storytelling ability and his
2626 generosity of spirit, John Cabaniss made a positive difference in
2727 many lives, and his loved ones will forever cherish their memories
2828 of him; now, therefore, be it
2929 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3030 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of John D. Cabaniss and
3131 extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife,
3232 Dorothy Cabaniss; to his stepsons, Dr. Charles Jaynes, Jr., and his
3333 wife, Debbie, and Mark Jaynes and his wife, Marla; to his
3434 grandchildren, Jason, Ryan, Lauren, Garrett, and Katelyn Jaynes,
3535 Haley Thorpe, Britney Cross, and Brady Castille; to his eight
3636 great-grandchildren; and to his other relatives and many friends;
3737 and, be it further
3838 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3939 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4040 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of John D.
4141 Cabaniss.
