H.R. No. 1820 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, John Lemons is retiring as superintendent of the Bushland Independent School District on June 30, 2009, and this occasion provides a fitting opportunity to honor him for the notable contributions he has made throughout his career in education; and WHEREAS, The son of a schoolteacher, John Lemons was raised in Memphis, Texas; he graduated from Memphis High School and attended The University of Texas, Texas Tech University, and West Texas A&M University, ultimately earning a master's degree in administration; and WHEREAS, Mr. Lemons began his career in education as a teacher with Canyon ISD; during his 15 years with the district, he went on to serve as assistant principal at Valley View Junior High, principal at Rex Reeves Elementary School, the first principal at Randall High School, and associate executive director at the Region XVI Education Service Center; and WHEREAS, When this dedicated administrator became superintendent of Bushland ISD in 1995, the district served just 422 students enrolled in kindergarten through the eighth grade; during his tenure, enrollment nearly tripled and the tax base more than doubled; moreover, Bushland added high school instruction to its educational offerings and is graduating its second senior class in May 2009; in the course of this dramatic expansion, schools in the district upheld exceptional academic standards and claimed numerous athletic championships, including six district titles in 2008-2009 alone and back-to-back state championships in volleyball in 2007 and 2008; and WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Lemons enjoys the love and support of his two children, and his family also includes five grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; he is a member of the choir at his church and enjoys music and golf in his leisure time; and WHEREAS, Through his genuine concern for the well-being of young people and his passion for education, John Lemons has overseen many advancements during his years with Bushland ISD, and he may indeed reflect with pride on his outstanding record of service; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby honor John Lemons on his retirement as superintendent of the Bushland Independent School District and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Lemons as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
