No. 1876 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Andrew Cornish and Tyler Gregston of Hallsville High School won top honors for Conference 4A of the 2009 University Interscholastic League Cross-Examination Debate State Tournament in Austin; and WHEREAS, Debating the topic, "The United States federal government should substantially increase alternative energy incentives in the United States," these two dedicated young men won the state championship in 8 rounds, with all 16 judges voting for them; they received both the Gold Gavel and the Silver Gavel as the top two speakers in the cross-examination debate; and WHEREAS, Mr. Cornish and Mr. Gregston have served as cross-examination debate captains for the past two years, and they have been national qualifiers for two consecutive years in the National Forensic League; in 2008, they were chosen by the UIL State Speech and Debate director to serve on the UIL State Speech Honor Crew; and WHEREAS, Together they have won the Northeast Texas Debate Association Tournament of Champions for two years in a row, and they have won best speaker honors at the Northeast Texas Debate Association and at UIL district and state competitions; they have gone undefeated at National qualifier, UIL district, and UIL state contests, without a single judge voting against them; and WHEREAS, The son of Kevin and Joy Cornish, Andrew Cornish was also the UIL regional champion in social studies in 2009, qualifying him for the state contest; he is the president of the Speech and Debate and Junior Historians clubs; and WHEREAS, Tyler Gregston is the son of Steve and Jackie Gregston; he represented Hallsville High School at Boys State and the Rotary Youth Leadership Camp, and he serves as vice president of the National Honor Society; and WHEREAS, These two outstanding young Texans have consistently worked hard and demonstrated tremendous skill in the art of debate and public speaking, and they have brought great distinction to themselves and to Hallsville High School; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Andrew Cornish and Tyler Gregston for their victory at the UIL Cross-Examination Debate State Tournament and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued success and a bright future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Cornish and Mr. Gregston as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
