5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Andrew Cornish and Tyler Gregston of Hallsville High |

7 | 7 | | Interscholastic League Cross-Examination Debate State Tournament |

8 | 8 | | in Austin; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Debating the topic, "The United States federal |
---|
10 | 10 | | government should substantially increase alternative energy |
---|
11 | 11 | | incentives in the United States," these two dedicated young men won |
---|
12 | 12 | | the state championship in 8 rounds, with all 16 judges voting for |
---|
13 | 13 | | them; they received both the Gold Gavel and the Silver Gavel as the |
---|
14 | 14 | | top two speakers in the cross-examination debate; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Cornish and Mr. Gregston have served as |
---|
16 | 16 | | cross-examination debate captains for the past two years, and they |
---|
17 | 17 | | have been national qualifiers for two consecutive years in the |
---|
18 | 18 | | National Forensic League; in 2008, they were chosen by the UIL State |
---|
19 | 19 | | Speech and Debate director to serve on the UIL State Speech Honor |
---|
20 | 20 | | Crew; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Together they have won the Northeast Texas Debate |
---|
22 | 22 | | Association Tournament of Champions for two years in a row, and they |
---|
23 | 23 | | have won best speaker honors at the Northeast Texas Debate |
---|
24 | 24 | | Association and at UIL district and state competitions; they have |
---|
25 | 25 | | gone undefeated at National qualifier, UIL district, and UIL state |
---|
26 | 26 | | contests, without a single judge voting against them; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, The son of Kevin and Joy Cornish, Andrew Cornish was |
---|
28 | 28 | | also the UIL regional champion in social studies in 2009, |
---|
29 | 29 | | qualifying him for the state contest; he is the president of the |
---|
30 | 30 | | Speech and Debate and Junior Historians clubs; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Tyler Gregston is the son of Steve and Jackie |
---|
32 | 32 | | Gregston; he represented Hallsville High School at Boys State and |
---|
33 | 33 | | the Rotary Youth Leadership Camp, and he serves as vice president of |
---|
34 | 34 | | the National Honor Society; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, These two outstanding young Texans have |
---|
36 | 36 | | consistently worked hard and demonstrated tremendous skill in the |
---|
37 | 37 | | art of debate and public speaking, and they have brought great |
---|
38 | 38 | | distinction to themselves and to Hallsville High School; now, |

39 | 39 | | therefore, be it |

40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

41 | 41 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Andrew Cornish and Tyler Gregston |

42 | 42 | | for their victory at the UIL Cross-Examination Debate State |

43 | 43 | | Tournament and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued |
