| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The year 2009 marks the 70th anniversary of the |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | founding of the Edinburg Lions Club, and this occasion provides a |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | welcome opportunity to honor this admirable civic organization; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, On November 12, 1939, dedicated Edinburg residents |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | came together to charter a local Lions Club; their efforts were a |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | continuation of a movement that had begun in 1917, when the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Association of Lions Clubs was formed in Chicago; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Since early in the organization's history, members |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | have vowed to be "Knights of the Blind" in response to a personal |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | request made to them by Helen Keller; the Edinburg Lions carry forth |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | this mission by providing eyeglasses to children and adults who |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | lack them and by backing a range of worthwhile programs, including |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Leader Dogs for the Blind, the Lions Eye Bank of Texas, and the |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Lions World Services for the Blind; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Members of the Edinburg Lions Club have also |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | benefited their fellow citizens in numerous other ways; the club |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | has donated funds for park and library improvements, sponsored |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | youth athletics and Boys and Girls Club programs, and supported the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Texas Lions Camp, which offers enriching outdoor experiences to |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | children with medical conditions; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Deeply committed to its work, the membership of the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | club includes numerous individuals who have been active in the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | organization for several decades, with the most experienced drawing |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | on 45 years as active Lions; by embodying the motto "We Serve," the |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | caring citizens who make up this exceptional civic group have had a |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | lasting and positive impact on their community, and they are indeed |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | deserving of recognition in this special anniversary year; now, |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | therefore, be it |

| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 34 | 34 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the Edinburg Lions Club on the |

| 35 | 35 | | 70th anniversary of its founding and extend to the members sincere |

| 36 | 36 | | best wishes for continued success with their important projects; |
