H.R. No. 1936 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The year 2009 marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Edinburg Lions Club, and this occasion provides a welcome opportunity to honor this admirable civic organization; and WHEREAS, On November 12, 1939, dedicated Edinburg residents came together to charter a local Lions Club; their efforts were a continuation of a movement that had begun in 1917, when the Association of Lions Clubs was formed in Chicago; and WHEREAS, Since early in the organization's history, members have vowed to be "Knights of the Blind" in response to a personal request made to them by Helen Keller; the Edinburg Lions carry forth this mission by providing eyeglasses to children and adults who lack them and by backing a range of worthwhile programs, including Leader Dogs for the Blind, the Lions Eye Bank of Texas, and the Lions World Services for the Blind; and WHEREAS, Members of the Edinburg Lions Club have also benefited their fellow citizens in numerous other ways; the club has donated funds for park and library improvements, sponsored youth athletics and Boys and Girls Club programs, and supported the Texas Lions Camp, which offers enriching outdoor experiences to children with medical conditions; and WHEREAS, Deeply committed to its work, the membership of the club includes numerous individuals who have been active in the organization for several decades, with the most experienced drawing on 45 years as active Lions; by embodying the motto "We Serve," the caring citizens who make up this exceptional civic group have had a lasting and positive impact on their community, and they are indeed deserving of recognition in this special anniversary year; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the Edinburg Lions Club on the 70th anniversary of its founding and extend to the members sincere best wishes for continued success with their important projects; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the club as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
