44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The death of John Paul Scarbrough of El Paso on March
66 30, 2009, at the age of 90, has profoundly saddened his family and
77 friends; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of Joseph and Roxie Scarbrough, Dr.
99 Scarbrough was born on June 26, 1918; he served his country with
1010 distinction as a weather squadron commander during World War II and
1111 was stationed with the Army Air Corps Eighth Air Force in England
1212 and France; and
1313 WHEREAS, Dr. Scarbrough earned his doctorate from the
1414 University of New Mexico and went on to become a professor of
1515 education at The University of Texas at El Paso; deeply committed to
1616 teacher education, he mentored hundreds of students with enormous
1717 insight and generosity, and through them made a positive difference
1818 in the lives of schoolchildren in El Paso and beyond; and
1919 WHEREAS, In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr.
2020 Scarbrough served as a liaison between the university and the El
2121 Paso and Ysleta public school systems and was a favorite keynote
2222 speaker at local high school graduations; he gained the lasting
2323 respect and affection of his students, his colleagues, and the
2424 education community, and he was honored as Professor of the Year;
2525 after retiring from the university, he was awarded emeritus status;
2626 and
2727 WHEREAS, This distinguished educator also earned the
2828 appreciation of the community as a cofounder and longtime board
2929 member of the El Paso Chopin Music Festival and of the El Paso Civic
3030 Orchestra; he enjoyed many happy years of marriage to Lucy Ardans
3131 Scarbrough, who brought joy into his life through music and
3232 creativity; he was devoted to his four children and treasured his
3333 nieces, nephews, and other members of his extended family; and
3434 WHEREAS, An inspiring individual, John Paul Scarbrough was
3535 greatly admired for his intellect, his honesty, his thoughtfulness,
3636 and his strength of character, and those who held him dear will
3737 forever cherish their memories of him; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3939 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of John Paul Scarbrough
4040 and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
4141 children, Paul and Mark Scarbrough, Ann Hanna, and Ginger Andersen;
4242 to his grandchildren, Simon and Julian Wilner, Daniel Harry,
4343 Therese and Drake Hanna, and John Paul, Bridget, and Mark Andersen;
4444 to his brother, Wendell Scarbrough; and to his many other relatives
4545 and friends; and, be it further
4646 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4747 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4848 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of John Paul
4949 Scarbrough.
