5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The death of John Paul Scarbrough of El Paso on March |

6 | 6 | | 30, 2009, at the age of 90, has profoundly saddened his family and |

7 | 7 | | friends; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The son of Joseph and Roxie Scarbrough, Dr. |
---|
9 | 9 | | Scarbrough was born on June 26, 1918; he served his country with |
---|
10 | 10 | | distinction as a weather squadron commander during World War II and |
---|
11 | 11 | | was stationed with the Army Air Corps Eighth Air Force in England |
---|
12 | 12 | | and France; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Scarbrough earned his doctorate from the |
---|
14 | 14 | | University of New Mexico and went on to become a professor of |
---|
15 | 15 | | education at The University of Texas at El Paso; deeply committed to |
---|
16 | 16 | | teacher education, he mentored hundreds of students with enormous |
---|
17 | 17 | | insight and generosity, and through them made a positive difference |
---|
18 | 18 | | in the lives of schoolchildren in El Paso and beyond; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. |
---|
20 | 20 | | Scarbrough served as a liaison between the university and the El |
---|
21 | 21 | | Paso and Ysleta public school systems and was a favorite keynote |
---|
22 | 22 | | speaker at local high school graduations; he gained the lasting |
---|
23 | 23 | | respect and affection of his students, his colleagues, and the |
---|
24 | 24 | | education community, and he was honored as Professor of the Year; |
---|
25 | 25 | | after retiring from the university, he was awarded emeritus status; |
---|
26 | 26 | | and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, This distinguished educator also earned the |
---|
28 | 28 | | appreciation of the community as a cofounder and longtime board |
---|
29 | 29 | | member of the El Paso Chopin Music Festival and of the El Paso Civic |
---|
30 | 30 | | Orchestra; he enjoyed many happy years of marriage to Lucy Ardans |
---|
31 | 31 | | Scarbrough, who brought joy into his life through music and |
---|
32 | 32 | | creativity; he was devoted to his four children and treasured his |
---|
33 | 33 | | nieces, nephews, and other members of his extended family; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, An inspiring individual, John Paul Scarbrough was |
---|
35 | 35 | | greatly admired for his intellect, his honesty, his thoughtfulness, |
---|
36 | 36 | | and his strength of character, and those who held him dear will |
---|
37 | 37 | | forever cherish their memories of him; now, therefore, be it |
---|
38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

39 | 39 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of John Paul Scarbrough |

40 | 40 | | and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his |

41 | 41 | | children, Paul and Mark Scarbrough, Ann Hanna, and Ginger Andersen; |

42 | 42 | | to his grandchildren, Simon and Julian Wilner, Daniel Harry, |
