 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, The death of John Paul Scarbrough of El Paso on March
 30, 2009, at the age of 90, has profoundly saddened his family and
 friends; and
 WHEREAS, The son of Joseph and Roxie Scarbrough, Dr.
 Scarbrough was born on June 26, 1918; he served his country with
 distinction as a weather squadron commander during World War II and
 was stationed with the Army Air Corps Eighth Air Force in England
 and France; and
 WHEREAS, Dr. Scarbrough earned his doctorate from the
 University of New Mexico and went on to become a professor of
 education at The University of Texas at El Paso; deeply committed to
 teacher education, he mentored hundreds of students with enormous
 insight and generosity, and through them made a positive difference
 in the lives of schoolchildren in El Paso and beyond; and
 WHEREAS, In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr.
 Scarbrough served as a liaison between the university and the El
 Paso and Ysleta public school systems and was a favorite keynote
 speaker at local high school graduations; he gained the lasting
 respect and affection of his students, his colleagues, and the
 education community, and he was honored as Professor of the Year;
 after retiring from the university, he was awarded emeritus status;
 and
 WHEREAS, This distinguished educator also earned the
 appreciation of the community as a cofounder and longtime board
 member of the El Paso Chopin Music Festival and of the El Paso Civic
 Orchestra; he enjoyed many happy years of marriage to Lucy Ardans
 Scarbrough, who brought joy into his life through music and
 creativity; he was devoted to his four children and treasured his
 nieces, nephews, and other members of his extended family; and
 WHEREAS, An inspiring individual, John Paul Scarbrough was
 greatly admired for his intellect, his honesty, his thoughtfulness,
 and his strength of character, and those who held him dear will
 forever cherish their memories of him; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of John Paul Scarbrough
 and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
 children, Paul and Mark Scarbrough, Ann Hanna, and Ginger Andersen;
 to his grandchildren, Simon and Julian Wilner, Daniel Harry,
 Therese and Drake Hanna, and John Paul, Bridget, and Mark Andersen;
 to his brother, Wendell Scarbrough; and to his many other relatives
 and friends; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of John Paul
 Scarbrough.
