H.R. No. 2041 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Residents of Elsa lost an admired neighbor and a respected member of the community with the passing of Leonel Garza, Sr., on April 4, 2009, at the age of 85; and WHEREAS, Mr. Garza was born on December 4, 1923, to Castulo and Juanita Garcia Garza in Ciudad Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico; he married the former Irene Canales and they moved to Elsa in 1941, where Mr. Garza initially worked in various agriculture-related jobs; and WHEREAS, The couple enjoyed a rewarding marriage and raised five children, Palmira, Elmira, Luis, Leonel, and Ancira; with the passing years, the family grew to include 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; and WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Garza founded Garza's Flower Shop in Elsa in 1969; the business was a success, and the couple were able to acquire property and help their children and grandchildren to establish productive lives of their own; though his Mexican heritage was always dear to his heart, Mr. Garza was proud of his adopted country and welcomed the opportunity to share in the responsibilities of being a U.S. citizen; and WHEREAS, A caring husband and father with a wonderful sense of humor, Mr. Garza entertained his loved ones with his jokes and comical antics, and he took great enjoyment in music, dancing, traveling, and playing dominos; his life was an inspiring example of the positive things that can be achieved through hard work and an abiding concern for others, and he will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by all who had the good fortune to know him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Leonel Garza, Sr., and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Irene Canales Garza; to his children, Palmira Lozano and her husband, Leonel, Elmira Garza, Luis Garza and his wife, Rosario, Leonel Garza, Jr., and his wife, Terry, and Ancira Cuartas and her husband, Dario; to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; to his sister, Lionila Gonzalez; to his cousin, Dominga Zamora; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Leonel Garza.
