5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Phillip Power of Lone Oak has been honored by the |
---|
6 | 6 | | Cherokee County Soil and Water Conservation District for his |
---|
7 | 7 | | achievements in sustainable forestry; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Striving to protect and improve the forest on his |
---|
9 | 9 | | 150 acres, Mr. Power follows a management plan developed with the |
---|
10 | 10 | | assistance of the Texas Forest Service, plotting fire lines, |
---|
11 | 11 | | performing routine selective thinning, and conducting regular |
---|
12 | 12 | | prescribed burns; in addition, he works to preserve the two creeks |
---|
13 | 13 | | that run through the property and to promote the welfare of the |
---|
14 | 14 | | area's wildlife; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The land has been in Mr. Power's family for more than |
---|
16 | 16 | | a century; his grandfather was a farmer, and his father worked |
---|
17 | 17 | | cattle on the land for 10 years before joining a state program that |
---|
18 | 18 | | planted pine trees for timber and conservation; the oldest part of |
---|
19 | 19 | | the Power home is built entirely from lumber cut and milled from |
---|
20 | 20 | | this forest; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Power and his wife, Norleine, are both graduates |
---|
22 | 22 | | of Rusk High School in Lone Oak; his career in law enforcement |
---|
23 | 23 | | eventually took him to Nacogdoches County, and he later worked in |
---|
24 | 24 | | the insurance industry in Houston, in education in Dallas, and in |
---|
25 | 25 | | energy conservation in Garland; following his retirement in 2000, |
---|
26 | 26 | | he and his wife fulfilled their dream of moving back to Lone Oak, |
---|
27 | 27 | | and Mr. Power was able to devote himself entirely to sustainable |
---|
28 | 28 | | forestry; his endeavors are heartily supported by his family, |
---|
29 | 29 | | including his daughter, his son-in-law, and his granddaughters, who |
---|
30 | 30 | | are enthusiastic visitors to the forest; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, A member of the American Tree Farm System, the |
---|
32 | 32 | | Trinity Neches Forest Landowner Association, and the state Forest |
---|
33 | 33 | | Stewardship program, Mr. Power received a Texas Forest Service |
---|
34 | 34 | | Stewardship award in 2008 from the United States Department of |
---|
35 | 35 | | Agriculture Forest Service State Foresters; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Sustainable forests are a great treasure of the Lone |
---|
37 | 37 | | Star State, and through his outstanding conservation efforts, |
---|
38 | 38 | | Phillip Power is improving our environment and preserving precious |
---|
39 | 39 | | resources for future generations; now, therefore, be it |
---|
40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
41 | 41 | | Legislature hereby commend Phillip Power for maintaining |
---|
42 | 42 | | sustainable forest land and congratulate him on his recognition by |
---|
43 | 43 | | the Cherokee County Soil and Water Conservation District; and, be |
---|
