| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Words cannot adequately express the heartache felt |

| 6 | 6 | | at the death of U.S. Army Sergeant Jonathan A. Markham of Bedford on |

| 7 | 7 | | May 29, 2007, at the age of 22; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Sergeant Markham was a cavalry scout with the 6th |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Cavalry Division, out of Fort Hood; deployed since October 2006, he |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | was killed by an improvised explosive device in Abu Sayda, Iraq; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Jonathan Markham was born in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | on March 2, 1985, and he grew up in Germany, Arizona, and Texas, |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | following his stepfather's career in the army; answering his |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | nation's call to duty, he joined the army in May 2004; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, At the time of his death, this brave soldier had |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | earned the rank of sergeant and was due to receive his stripes when |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | he returned to the United States; his commendations included the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal, the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Expeditionary Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, and the Combat Action |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Badge; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Exemplifying the highest ideals of the U.S. armed |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | forces, Jonathan Markham inspired others with his loyalty and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | patriotism, and all who knew and loved him will forever carry his |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | memory close in their hearts; now, therefore, be it |

| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 29 | 29 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Sergeant Jonathan A. |

| 30 | 30 | | Markham and extend sincere condolences to the members of his |

| 31 | 31 | | family: to his wife, Stacey Markham; to his son, Daniel Allen |

| 32 | 32 | | Markham; to his mother, Dawn Markham; to his stepfather, Steve |
