| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Members of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in |

| 6 | 6 | | Galveston are celebrating the 120th anniversary of their church's |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | founding on May 17, 2009; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Since its organization by 16 charter members in |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | 1889, the congregation of Macedonia has benefited from the able |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | leadership of many outstanding clergymen; today, that tradition of |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | dedicated pastoral service is continued by the Reverend A. Wilford |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Colbert, who assumed the pulpit of this historic church in 1993; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, United by their shared faith and inspired by the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | achievements of members who have gone before, the congregants of |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Macedonia carry out a wide range of ministries that offer |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | fellowship, encourage spiritual growth, and provide opportunities |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | for assisting those in need; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Macedonia also engages in the wider community in a |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | number of ways, such as working to foster intercultural |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | understanding, hosting gatherings related to local concerns, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | offering health screenings, and participating in voter |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | registration drives; in addition, the church provides space for |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | community functions and supports the Ambassadors Preparatory |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Academy charter school, which Reverend Colbert was instrumental in |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | launching; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Macedonia's sanctuary has stood at the corner of |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | 29th Street and Avenue M-1/2 since before the turn of the 20th |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | century; the first permanent church building on that site was |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | destroyed by the Galveston Storm of 1900, and the sanctuary that |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | replaced it was heavily damaged by Hurricane Ike in 2008; this |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | resilient congregation has recently completed repairs to their |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | facilities, however, and purchased several new properties to |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | facilitate future growth; and |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, For well over a century, countless Galveston |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | residents have looked to Macedonia for spiritual support and |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | guidance, and it is a privilege to join in honoring the church at |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | this special time in its rich history; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 120th anniversary of Macedonia |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | Missionary Baptist Church and extend to its pastor and congregation |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | sincere best wishes for a joyous and memorable celebration; and, be |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | it further |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
