 R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Members of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in
Galveston are celebrating the 120th anniversary of their church's
founding on May 17, 2009; and
WHEREAS, Since its organization by 16 charter members in
1889, the congregation of Macedonia has benefited from the able
leadership of many outstanding clergymen; today, that tradition of
dedicated pastoral service is continued by the Reverend A. Wilford
Colbert, who assumed the pulpit of this historic church in 1993; and
WHEREAS, United by their shared faith and inspired by the
achievements of members who have gone before, the congregants of
Macedonia carry out a wide range of ministries that offer
fellowship, encourage spiritual growth, and provide opportunities
for assisting those in need; and
WHEREAS, Macedonia also engages in the wider community in a
number of ways, such as working to foster intercultural
understanding, hosting gatherings related to local concerns,
offering health screenings, and participating in voter
registration drives; in addition, the church provides space for
community functions and supports the Ambassadors Preparatory
Academy charter school, which Reverend Colbert was instrumental in
 launching; and
WHEREAS, Macedonia's sanctuary has stood at the corner of
29th Street and Avenue M-1/2 since before the turn of the 20th
century; the first permanent church building on that site was
destroyed by the Galveston Storm of 1900, and the sanctuary that
replaced it was heavily damaged by Hurricane Ike in 2008; this
resilient congregation has recently completed repairs to their
facilities, however, and purchased several new properties to
 facilitate future growth; and
WHEREAS, For well over a century, countless Galveston
residents have looked to Macedonia for spiritual support and
guidance, and it is a privilege to join in honoring the church at
this special time in its rich history; now, therefore, be it
