44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The education of young Texans is a vital enterprise
66 for every school in the Lone Star State, and Our Mother of Mercy
77 Parochial School in Houston has been dedicated to that worthy goal
88 for eight decades; and
99 WHEREAS, Opened in 1930, the institution was established to
1010 provide schoolchildren in the Fifth Ward with a quality education
1111 in a religious environment; in the first year, enrollment exceeded
1212 100, and soon the original two-story brick structure was outgrown;
1313 in 1940, a new building was constructed, complete with high school
1414 facilities; and
1515 WHEREAS, The school currently serves 560 students in
1616 kindergarten through ninth grade, under the able guidance of the
1717 Sisters of the Holy Family and Father John B. Doyle; and
1818 WHEREAS, Over the course of its rich history, Our Mother of
1919 Mercy Parochial School has educated thousands of Fifth Ward
2020 students and provided a foundation on which they could build
2121 rewarding and fulfilling lives; now, therefore, be it
2222 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2323 Legislature hereby commend all those associated with Our Mother of
2424 Mercy Parochial School for their efforts in behalf of the youth of
2525 Houston and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued
2626 success; and, be it further
2727 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2828 prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas
2929 House of Representatives.
