H.R. No. 2404 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Dr. David A. Polnick, superintendent of the Abilene Independent School District, is retiring from that post in June 2010, after 38 years of outstanding service in the field of education; and WHEREAS, Since assuming the superintendency of Abilene ISD in June 2003, Dr. Polnick has overseen the education of more than 16,000 students each year and worked tirelessly to provide them with superior instruction; among the challenges to which he has devoted particular attention have been preparing students for the changing needs of the workplace and dramatically upgrading the district's technological infrastructure; in 2006, Business Outlook magazine rated the Abilene public school system as the 17th best among urban districts across the country; and WHEREAS, Born and raised in Abilene, David Polnick began his career with Abilene ISD as a fifth-grade teacher; after eight years in the classroom and another eight years as an elementary school principal, he became assistant superintendent and then deputy superintendent for business and finance, an office he held for 13 years; from 2001 to 2003, he served as assistant superintendent for financial services with the Lubbock Independent School District; and WHEREAS, This distinguished educator is the first school superintendent in the United States to receive the highest award conferred on civilians by the United States Air Force, the Scroll of Appreciation; that honor was bestowed on him in recognition of his assistance to military families at Dyess Air Force Base; he is also the recipient of the 2007 HEB Excellence in Education Award; and WHEREAS, Dr. Polnick earned his bachelor's degree from Concordia Teachers College, his master's degree from Abilene Christian University, and his doctorate from Texas Tech University; and WHEREAS, David Polnick and his wife, Mary Ann, have a son and daughter-in-law, Benjamin and Kimberly Polnick, a daughter, Julie Polnick, and a grandson, Creighton; and WHEREAS, Through his unwavering commitment to the district's students and staff, Dr. David Polnick has led the way in fostering a supportive and challenging educational environment, one that gives students a vision of what they might attain if they strive for success and that equips them with skills they will need to build fulfilling and productive lives; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby honor Dr. David A. Polnick for his exceptional service as superintendent of the Abilene Independent School District and extend to him sincere best wishes for much happiness in the years ahead; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Dr. Polnick as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
