| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Members of the Combined Law Enforcement |

| 6 | 6 | | Associations of Texas hold a Texas Peace Officers' Memorial |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Ceremony biennially in solemn remembrance of those peace officers |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | who have been killed in the line of duty while serving their fellow |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | citizens; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Texans owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude to |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | those officers whose dedication to the public welfare enables us to |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | enjoy the benefits of a safe and orderly society; the passage of |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | time does not diminish that debt, nor does it allow us to forget the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | ultimate sacrifices made by these brave Texans; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Deputy Marshal George Wise is one such Texas hero; |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | stationed in Webb County and serving the Western District of Texas |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | for the U.S. Marshals Service, he was attempting to stop a smuggler |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | in the early morning hours of October 30, 1891, near School House |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Plaza in Laredo when he was fatally stabbed; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Deputy Marshal Wise exemplified the highest ideals |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | of his profession; committed to safeguarding the lives of others, |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | he had been one of the first members of the Laredo Fire Department |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | in 1883, and he had served for a time as a Laredo policeman and as a |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Webb County deputy sheriff before becoming a marshal; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The courage and dedication of George Wise have |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | earned this notable lawman an enduring place of honor in the history |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | of the law enforcement profession in Texas; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Deputy U.S. Marshal |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | George Wise of the U.S. Department of Justice - Marshals Service; |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | and, be it further |

| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

| 33 | 33 | | prepared and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns |
