H.R. No. 2435 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Members of the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas hold a Texas Peace Officers' Memorial Ceremony biennially in solemn remembrance of those peace officers who have been killed in the line of duty while serving their fellow citizens; and WHEREAS, Texans owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude to those officers whose dedication to the public welfare enables us to enjoy the benefits of a safe and orderly society; the passage of time does not diminish that debt, nor does it allow us to forget the ultimate sacrifices made by these brave Texans; and WHEREAS, Deputy Marshal George Wise is one such Texas hero; stationed in Webb County and serving the Western District of Texas for the U.S. Marshals Service, he was attempting to stop a smuggler in the early morning hours of October 30, 1891, near School House Plaza in Laredo when he was fatally stabbed; and WHEREAS, Deputy Marshal Wise exemplified the highest ideals of his profession; committed to safeguarding the lives of others, he had been one of the first members of the Laredo Fire Department in 1883, and he had served for a time as a Laredo policeman and as a Webb County deputy sheriff before becoming a marshal; and WHEREAS, The courage and dedication of George Wise have earned this notable lawman an enduring place of honor in the history of the law enforcement profession in Texas; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Deputy U.S. Marshal George Wise of the U.S. Department of Justice - Marshals Service; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Deputy U.S. Marshal George Wise.
