44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, For more than four decades, Enriqueta G. Fierro of
66 El Paso has dedicated herself to serving her community, and her
77 outstanding efforts indeed merit special recognition; and
88 WHEREAS, An El Paso native, the former Queta Galindo was born
99 on April 8, 1934, to Carlos and Guadalupe Galindo, and she went on
1010 to graduate from Bowie High School; it was there that she met her
1111 future husband, Jesus J. "Chuy" Fierro; the couple were married in
1212 1958, and they shared the joy of welcoming into their family four
1313 sons, Jesus, Carlos, Martin, and Mark; and
1414 WHEREAS, In the late 1960s, Mrs. Fierro began working on
1515 campaigns and participating in county conventions for the
1616 Democratic party, and in 1968, she became the staff assistant to
1717 U.S. Congressman Richard C. White; for the next 15 years, she acted
1818 as a liaison between his constituents and various federal agencies,
1919 and she represented the Congressional office on a number of
2020 municipal boards; in 1983, she began a decade-long tenure as an
2121 assistant to the protocol officer at Fort Bliss, where she was
2222 recognized with many accolades, including the Superior Civilian
2323 Service Award; and
2424 WHEREAS, A dedicated member of LULAC since 1968, Mrs. Fierro
2525 has supervised the national office in El Paso, and in 1994, she
2626 began coordinating the group's national conventions; in addition,
2727 she has served as the LULAC National Chaplain, as president of LULAC
2828 Project Amistad, and as the deputy director for District 4, and she
2929 has been named LULAC Woman of the Year at the district, state, and
3030 national levels; she has also received the Outstanding LULAC State
3131 President of the Year designation, and she was inducted into the
3232 National LULAC Women's Hall of Fame in 1998; and
3333 WHEREAS, The El Paso County Democratic Chair from 2000
3434 through 2002, Mrs. Fierro has also served as the chair of Precinct
3535 88 for more than a decade, as the president of the Woman's National
3636 Democratic Club, and as a member of the El Paso County Democratic
3737 Executive Committee, and she was inducted into the El Paso County
3838 Democratic Hall of Fame and the Tejano Democrats Paso Del Norte
3939 Chapter Hall of Fame; and
4040 WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan has further contributed to such
4141 organizations as Providence Memorial Hospital, the YWCA Women's
4242 Resource Center, the City of El Paso Arts Resources Board, the El
4343 Paso Airport and Mass Transit Board, the local PTA, and El Paso
4444 Community College, and she was president of the Muscular Dystrophy
4545 Association; moreover, Mrs. Fierro has been active on the boards of
4646 the International Hispanic Cultural Institute, El Paso Counts, the
4747 El Paso Community Foundation, and the Hispanic Leadership
4848 Institute, and she was the first woman to be elected president of
4949 the board of the El Paso Civic Center; she has also been involved
5050 with Leadership El Paso and St. Pius X Church, and she was on the
5151 board of the Bowie High School Alumni Association and was named
5252 Bowie's Outstanding Ex-Student for 1986; and
5353 WHEREAS, Mrs. Fierro has received Special Congressional
5454 Recognition from U.S. Congressman Silvestre Reyes, and numerous
5555 other tributes, including the Del Norte Award from the County of El
5656 Paso, the Lucy G. Acosta Humanitarian Award, the Hidalgo Award, and
5757 the Star of the Mountain Award from Mayor John Cook, and she was
5858 listed among the World of Women by the El Paso Times; and
5959 WHEREAS, With a genuine concern for her fellow citizens,
6060 Queta Fierro has given freely of her time and talents for the
6161 benefit of her community, and she is an inspiration to all those who
6262 are privileged to know her; now, therefore, be it
6363 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
6464 Legislature hereby honor Enriqueta G. Fierro on her notable history
6565 of civic leadership and volunteerism and extend to her sincere best
6666 wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
6767 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
6868 prepared for Mrs. Fierro as an expression of high regard by the
6969 Texas House of Representatives.
