8 | 8 | | celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding in 2009; and |

9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Established in 1909 by Sixto Garcia, The New York |

10 | 10 | | Store served as a much-needed general store for Hebbronville and |
---|
11 | 11 | | Jim Hogg County on its opening, providing its customers with a wide |
---|
12 | 12 | | variety of merchandise, including groceries, hardware, and |
---|
13 | 13 | | agricultural supplies and equipment; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The store likewise aided the community by allowing |
---|
15 | 15 | | area citizens to purchase items on credit and offering wholesale |
---|
16 | 16 | | prices to ranchers and farmers buying in large quantities; the |
---|
17 | 17 | | store was a welcome addition to the town, offering customers |
---|
18 | 18 | | safeguards for their wagons and a resting place for their horses; |

20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Today, The New York Store continues to thrive by |

21 | 21 | | stocking a variety of western wear, specializing in clothing and |

22 | 22 | | accessories that preserve the vaquero tradition; for the past 15 |

23 | 23 | | years, the store has been owned and operated by Mr. Garcia's |
---|
24 | 24 | | granddaughter, Marguerita Ellison, who took over the business in |
---|
25 | 25 | | 1994 from her parents, Blas and Herlinda Salinas; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, By carrying on her family's tradition of serving the |
---|
27 | 27 | | community, Mrs. Ellison has ensured that The New York Store |
---|
28 | 28 | | continues to contribute to the cultural and economic life of Jim |
---|
29 | 29 | | Hogg County, while preserving a vital part of the town's rich |
---|
30 | 30 | | history; now, therefore, be it |

31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

32 | 32 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the centennial of The New York Store |

33 | 33 | | in Hebbronville and extend to Marguerita Ellison and her staff |
