H.R. No. 2476 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The tradition of family-owned and -operated businesses is strong in the Lone Star State, and The New York Store of Hebbronville is contributing to that proud heritage by celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding in 2009; and WHEREAS, Established in 1909 by Sixto Garcia, The New York Store served as a much-needed general store for Hebbronville and Jim Hogg County on its opening, providing its customers with a wide variety of merchandise, including groceries, hardware, and agricultural supplies and equipment; and WHEREAS, The store likewise aided the community by allowing area citizens to purchase items on credit and offering wholesale prices to ranchers and farmers buying in large quantities; the store was a welcome addition to the town, offering customers safeguards for their wagons and a resting place for their horses; and WHEREAS, Today, The New York Store continues to thrive by stocking a variety of western wear, specializing in clothing and accessories that preserve the vaquero tradition; for the past 15 years, the store has been owned and operated by Mr. Garcia's granddaughter, Marguerita Ellison, who took over the business in 1994 from her parents, Blas and Herlinda Salinas; and WHEREAS, By carrying on her family's tradition of serving the community, Mrs. Ellison has ensured that The New York Store continues to contribute to the cultural and economic life of Jim Hogg County, while preserving a vital part of the town's rich history; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the centennial of The New York Store in Hebbronville and extend to Marguerita Ellison and her staff sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the store as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
