44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The city of Dallas has greatly benefited from the
66 dedicated leadership of the Honorable Tom Leppert since he was
77 elected mayor in 2007; and
88 WHEREAS, During his tenure in municipal government, Mayor
99 Leppert has ably guided the city with an eye to the future, and his
1010 knowledge and expertise in a wide range of community issues have
1111 benefited area residents in myriad ways; focused on improving
1212 education, he has launched such initiatives as Ready to Read at
1313 Dallas, the Mayor's Intern Fellows, Operation Front Door, and the
1414 Mayor's Chesapeake Energy Scholarship Fund; he has also instituted
1515 a neighborhood patrol, hired more police officers, and secured
1616 funding to alleviate homelessness; and
1717 WHEREAS, An ardent supporter of environmental protection
1818 efforts, Mayor Leppert has created a Green Building Program to
1919 increase energy efficiency and resource conservation; he has
2020 further contributed to the city by attracting major corporations to
2121 the area, expanding the Inland Port, moving forward with the
2222 Trinity River Corridor project, and leading trade missions in China
2323 and Mexico; and
2424 WHEREAS, Tom Leppert graduated cum laude from Claremont
2525 McKenna College in Southern California, and after earning an MBA
2626 with distinction from Harvard Business School, he was appointed by
2727 President Ronald Reagan as a White House Fellow to work for the
2828 secretary of the treasury; Mr. Leppert went on to become the chair
2929 and CEO of Turner Construction Company, an $8 billion corporation,
3030 which he helped grow significantly, and he oversaw the acquisition
3131 of more than $1 billion in minority contracts; in addition, he is
3232 active on the board of Washington Mutual, Inc.; and
3333 WHEREAS, Mayor Leppert has further distinguished himself
3434 through his involvement in several community organizations,
3535 including the Baylor Health Care System and the Dallas Committee on
3636 Foreign Relations; a former chair of the Dallas Regional Chamber,
3737 he continues to serve on the group's executive committee, and he is
3838 the vice chair of the board of trustees for Claremont McKenna
3939 College; and
4040 WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Tom Leppert enjoys the love
4141 and support of his wife, Laura, and the couple have been blessed
4242 with three children, Christian, Catherine, and Ryan; and
4343 WHEREAS, Each day, public servants improve the quality of
4444 life for their fellow citizens in innumerable ways, and the efforts
4545 of Mayor Leppert are helping to make Dallas an even better place in
4646 which to live and work; now, therefore, be it
4747 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4848 Legislature hereby honor Mayor Tom Leppert for his committed public
4949 service and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued
5050 success; and, be it further
5151 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5252 prepared for Mayor Leppert as an expression of high regard by the
5353 Texas House of Representatives.
