H.R. No. 2497 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Home Comforts is making a measurable difference in the lives of the mentally ill in Bexar County; and WHEREAS, Chartered in October 2002, Home Comforts is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization that is dedicated to helping the mentally ill establish and maintain their own homes; mentally ill men and women can experience great stress and anxiety after transitioning into independent housing; they often have few resources, if any, and disability benefits can be slow to arrive; and WHEREAS, Home Comforts intervenes at this critical juncture with a welcome basket of such household items as linens, dishes, and cleaning supplies, and the group also donates a variety of furniture; in addition, Home Comforts can help with furniture storage for those dealing with an eviction, and in rare instances it even provides small sums of cash for special needs; and WHEREAS, Supported by St. Luke's Health Care Ministries, Home Comforts works in conjunction with Merced Housing Texas, the Assistance League, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, South San Community for Mental Health, and several churches; it serves some 250 families a year, with referrals coming from the Center for Health Care Services, the Veterans Administration, private providers, and others; and WHEREAS, Clients of Home Comforts have received vital assistance from this notable organization, and it is indeed a pleasure to commend these caring volunteers for their many good works; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby honor Home Comforts for its efforts in behalf of the mentally ill of Bexar County and extend to all those associated with the organization sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Home Comforts as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
