5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, LULAC Project Amistad in El Paso is making a |
---|
6 | 6 | | positive difference in the lives of area residents; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Created in 1976, Project Amistad is a nonprofit |
---|
8 | 8 | | social service agency that provides direct delivery of services for |
---|
9 | 9 | | the elderly and for adults with disabilities; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The organization administers several programs to |
---|
11 | 11 | | meet the needs of area residents; through the El Paso County |
---|
12 | 12 | | Indigent Guardianship Program, LULAC Project Amistad serves as a |
---|
13 | 13 | | guardian for indigent persons who have no one else to care for them; |
---|
14 | 14 | | the probate court brings clients to the attention of LULAC Project |
---|
15 | 15 | | Amistad, whose caseworkers prepare initial assessments and testify |
---|
16 | 16 | | before the court; if the court assigns the agency as legal guardian, |
---|
17 | 17 | | caseworkers develop individualized service plans and monitor |
---|
18 | 18 | | clients accordingly; moreover, should a client die, they make all |
---|
19 | 19 | | funeral arrangements; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Low-income, elderly, and disabled persons at risk of |
---|
21 | 21 | | becoming homeless, poorly nourished, or unable to care for |
---|
22 | 22 | | themselves are referred to LULAC Project Amistad's Money Management & |
---|
23 | 23 | | Social Services Program by the federal Social Security |
---|
24 | 24 | | Administration, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and other |
---|
25 | 25 | | agencies; staff members manage the assets of these clients to |
---|
26 | 26 | | ensure they are provided with the necessary shelter, food, and |
---|
27 | 27 | | medication; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Recognizing a lack of transportation among elderly |
---|
29 | 29 | | and disabled residents in El Paso County, LULAC Project Amistad |
---|
30 | 30 | | directs the Medical Transportation Program and the El Paso County |
---|
31 | 31 | | Rural Transit Program; medical transportation services, which |
---|
32 | 32 | | begin as early as 4 a.m. and run until 8 p.m., are especially |
---|
33 | 33 | | crucial for people who live in colonias; the rural transit program |
---|
34 | 34 | | works in conjunction with El Paso County and provides fixed-route |
---|
35 | 35 | | service to the nearest Sun Metro bus terminal for residents who live |
---|
36 | 36 | | outside the city limits; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Hundreds of people benefit each year from the |
---|
38 | 38 | | dedicated services of LULAC Project Amistad, and its outstanding |
---|
39 | 39 | | efforts to protect a most vulnerable segment of El Paso society are |
---|
40 | 40 | | indeed worthy of special recognition; now, therefore, be it |
---|
41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
42 | 42 | | Legislature hereby honor LULAC Project Amistad for its commitment |
---|
43 | 43 | | to serving the elderly and adults with disabilities and extend to |
---|
44 | 44 | | all those associated with the agency sincere best wishes for |
---|
45 | 45 | | continued success with their important work; and, be it further |
---|
46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
47 | 47 | | prepared for LULAC Project Amistad as an expression of high regard |
---|
48 | 48 | | by the Texas House of Representatives. |
