| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The family and friends of U.S. Army Staff Sergeant |

| 6 | 6 | | Gary Wayne Jeffries of Roscoe suffered an immeasurable loss with |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | his death on January 28, 2008, at the age of 37, while serving in |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Iraq; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, out of |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Fort Carson, Colorado, Staff Sergeant Jeffries was killed by an |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | improvised explosive device in Mosul; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Gary Jeffries graduated from Roscoe High School in |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | 1990, and he joined the Army in 1997; he served four tours of duty |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | overseas, including one deployment in Korea and three deployments |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | in Iraq; he looked out for the other soldiers in his unit, who |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | affectionately called him "Grandpa Six"; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, For his distinguished service, Staff Sergeant |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Jeffries earned the Army Commendation Medal with valor device, two |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Army Commendation Medals, five Army Achievement Medals, three Army |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Good Conduct Medals, and the National Defense Service Medal; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Our state and nation are fortunate to have men and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | women whose love of country leads them to serve in the military, and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | the passage of time can never diminish the profound debt that |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Americans owe Staff Sergeant Jeffries for his sacrifice; now, |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Staff Sergeant Gary |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Wayne Jeffries and extend sincere condolences to the members of his |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | family: to his mother, Fern Taylor; to his children, Zachary and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Sierra; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further |

| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
