H.R. No. 2506 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The family and friends of U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Gary Wayne Jeffries of Roscoe suffered an immeasurable loss with his death on January 28, 2008, at the age of 37, while serving in Iraq; and WHEREAS, Assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, out of Fort Carson, Colorado, Staff Sergeant Jeffries was killed by an improvised explosive device in Mosul; and WHEREAS, Gary Jeffries graduated from Roscoe High School in 1990, and he joined the Army in 1997; he served four tours of duty overseas, including one deployment in Korea and three deployments in Iraq; he looked out for the other soldiers in his unit, who affectionately called him "Grandpa Six"; and WHEREAS, For his distinguished service, Staff Sergeant Jeffries earned the Army Commendation Medal with valor device, two Army Commendation Medals, five Army Achievement Medals, three Army Good Conduct Medals, and the National Defense Service Medal; and WHEREAS, Our state and nation are fortunate to have men and women whose love of country leads them to serve in the military, and the passage of time can never diminish the profound debt that Americans owe Staff Sergeant Jeffries for his sacrifice; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Staff Sergeant Gary Wayne Jeffries and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his mother, Fern Taylor; to his children, Zachary and Sierra; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Gary Wayne Jeffries.
