| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Texas Council of Alpha Chapters of Alpha Phi |

| 6 | 6 | | Alpha Fraternity is holding its 45th annual district convention |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | from February 5 to 8, 2009, in San Antonio; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Founded at Cornell University in 1906, Alpha Phi |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Alpha was the first intercollegiate Greek fraternity for African |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Americans; the fraternity has been interracial since 1945, and its |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | members have dedicated themselves to promoting brotherhood and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | academic excellence, as well as to working to effect positive |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | change in their communities; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of its rich history, Alpha Phi Alpha |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | has had such illustrious members as W. E. B. DuBois, Paul Robeson, |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Thurgood Marshall, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Andrew Young; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, The fraternity's District of Texas includes 28 |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | chapters at public and private colleges and universities and 28 |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | graduate chapters in many Texas cities; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Hosted by the Delta Rho Lambda, Pi Theta Lambda, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Epsilon Sigma, and Tau Tau Chapters, the convention presents an |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | excellent opportunity for the members of Alpha Phi Alpha to come |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | together for inspiration and fellowship, allowing them to renew old |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | bonds and make new ones, and empowering them to return to their |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | communities in a spirit of hope and renewal; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Legislature hereby honor the Texas members of Alpha Phi Alpha |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Fraternity and extend to them sincere best wishes for a meaningful |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | and memorable event; and, be it further |

| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
