H.R. No. 251 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The Texas Council of Alpha Chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity is holding its 45th annual district convention from February 5 to 8, 2009, in San Antonio; and WHEREAS, Founded at Cornell University in 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha was the first intercollegiate Greek fraternity for African Americans; the fraternity has been interracial since 1945, and its members have dedicated themselves to promoting brotherhood and academic excellence, as well as to working to effect positive change in their communities; and WHEREAS, Over the course of its rich history, Alpha Phi Alpha has had such illustrious members as W. E. B. DuBois, Paul Robeson, Thurgood Marshall, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Andrew Young; and WHEREAS, The fraternity's District of Texas includes 28 chapters at public and private colleges and universities and 28 graduate chapters in many Texas cities; and WHEREAS, Hosted by the Delta Rho Lambda, Pi Theta Lambda, Epsilon Sigma, and Tau Tau Chapters, the convention presents an excellent opportunity for the members of Alpha Phi Alpha to come together for inspiration and fellowship, allowing them to renew old bonds and make new ones, and empowering them to return to their communities in a spirit of hope and renewal; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby honor the Texas members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and extend to them sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable event; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the council as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
