| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The members of a team from The University of Texas |

| 6 | 6 | | School of Law have earned great distinction by winning the 2009 |

| 7 | 7 | | Hispanic National Bar Association Moot Court Competition; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Founded 30 years ago to represent the interests of |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | more than 100,000 Hispanic legal professionals and students, the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | HNBA sponsors a moot court competition during its annual midyear |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | conference; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Competing against 31 teams from across the nation, |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | the members of the UT group presented cases and made arguments based |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | on a pending U.S. Supreme Court case challenging certain rulings of |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | former U.S. attorney general John Ashcroft; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The victorious team included Cassandra Cuellar, |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Belinda Garcia, and Rudy Segura, who together defeated the team |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | from Loyola Law School Los Angeles in the final round to bring home |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | the national prize; Mr. Segura also received top honors as best |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | speaker; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The team was coached by Shalla Santos, an associate |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | at Allensworth & Porter, LLP, and a graduate of the UT School of |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Law; as a law student, she was a member of the 2006 Giles Sutherland |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Rich Memorial Moot Court national championship team; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, This impressive victory represents the 12th time in |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | the past decade that a UT School of Law team has won a national |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | championship, and in the team's honor, The University of Texas |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Tower was ceremonially illuminated in orange light on the evening |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | of April 29, 2009; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, These outstanding law students have earned an |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | impressive honor with their talent, dedication, and hard work, and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | they may take great pride in their achievement; now, therefore, be |
|---|

| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
