5	5	WHEREAS, Family and friends were deeply saddened by the
6	6	passing of longtime Brady resident Gilbert Currie on August 26,
7	7	2007, at the age of 61; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Gilbert "Buttermilk" Currie was born in Brady on
9	9	April 9, 1946, to James Arthur Currie and Myrtle Mae Maxwell Currie;
10	10	in 1965 he was joined in matrimony to Jacqueline Potter, and he
11	11	provided for his family by working as a custodian for the Brady
12	12	Independent School District for 20 years until his retirement in
13	13	2004; and
14	14	WHEREAS, Mr. Currie was active in his community as a member of
15	15	the Brady Masonic Lodge, the Jaycees, and the First United
16	16	Methodist Church of Brady; he founded His Hands Ministry in the late
17	17	1980s and served as the lay director and a host mentor for the Heart
18	18	of Texas Emmaus community; and
19	19	WHEREAS, Combining his concern for others with a love of
20	20	cooking, Mr. Currie helped to organize the first Brady/McCulloch
21	21	County Chamber of Commerce World Championship Goat Cook-Off and
22	22	served as head cook for the annual event for 25 years; he was also
23	23	the head cook for his church's annual July Jubilee Barbecue for many
24	24	years; and
25	25	WHEREAS, Held in high regard by other community leaders, Mr.
26	26	Currie was asked to act as Santa Claus numerous times by the chamber
27	27	of commerce, the members of his church, and the Brady ISD; in 1986
28	28	he was named Citizen of the Year, and in 2000 the chamber of
29	29	commerce presented him with the organization's Lifetime
30	30	Achievement Award; in addition, he was the winner of the first
31	31	Bishop's Exemplar Award from the Southwest Texas Conference of the
32	32	United Methodist Church; and
33	33	WHEREAS, Devoted to his family, his faith, and his community,
34	34	Gilbert Currie was a generous and warmhearted man who gave of his
35	35	time and energy to help others, and his kindness and compassion will
36	36	forever be remembered by those who knew and loved him; now,
37	37	therefore, be it
38	38	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
39	39	Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Gilbert Currie and
40	40	extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his
41	41	wife, Jackie Currie; to his daughters, Sarah Moulden and her
42	42	husband, Matthew, and Stacy Fisher and her husband, Jordan; to his
43	43	brothers, J. T. Currie and his wife, Helma, J. W. Currie, and Job
44	44	Currie and his wife, Cathy; to his sister, Ida Mae Isom; to his
45	45	brothers-in-law, Kenneth Parum, Butch Airheart, John Potter and his
46	46	wife, Vickie, Jimmy Potter and his wife, Norma, and Joe Potter and
47	47	his wife, Billie; to his sister-in-law, Faye Currie; and to his
48	48	other relatives and friends; and, be it further
49	49	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
50	50	prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
51	51	Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Gilbert
52	52	Currie.
