H.R. No. 26
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Family and friends were deeply saddened by the
passing of longtime Brady resident Gilbert Currie on August 26,
2007, at the age of 61; and
WHEREAS, Gilbert "Buttermilk" Currie was born in Brady on
April 9, 1946, to James Arthur Currie and Myrtle Mae Maxwell Currie;
in 1965 he was joined in matrimony to Jacqueline Potter, and he
provided for his family by working as a custodian for the Brady
Independent School District for 20 years until his retirement in
2004; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Currie was active in his community as a member of
the Brady Masonic Lodge, the Jaycees, and the First United
Methodist Church of Brady; he founded His Hands Ministry in the late
1980s and served as the lay director and a host mentor for the Heart
of Texas Emmaus community; and
WHEREAS, Combining his concern for others with a love of
cooking, Mr. Currie helped to organize the first Brady/McCulloch
County Chamber of Commerce World Championship Goat Cook-Off and
served as head cook for the annual event for 25 years; he was also
the head cook for his church's annual July Jubilee Barbecue for many
years; and
WHEREAS, Held in high regard by other community leaders, Mr.
Currie was asked to act as Santa Claus numerous times by the chamber
of commerce, the members of his church, and the Brady ISD; in 1986
he was named Citizen of the Year, and in 2000 the chamber of
commerce presented him with the organization's Lifetime
Achievement Award; in addition, he was the winner of the first
Bishop's Exemplar Award from the Southwest Texas Conference of the
United Methodist Church; and
WHEREAS, Devoted to his family, his faith, and his community,
Gilbert Currie was a generous and warmhearted man who gave of his
time and energy to help others, and his kindness and compassion will
forever be remembered by those who knew and loved him; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Gilbert Currie and
extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his
wife, Jackie Currie; to his daughters, Sarah Moulden and her
husband, Matthew, and Stacy Fisher and her husband, Jordan; to his
brothers, J. T. Currie and his wife, Helma, J. W. Currie, and Job
Currie and his wife, Cathy; to his sister, Ida Mae Isom; to his
brothers-in-law, Kenneth Parum, Butch Airheart, John Potter and his
wife, Vickie, Jimmy Potter and his wife, Norma, and Joe Potter and
his wife, Billie; to his sister-in-law, Faye Currie; and to his
other relatives and friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Gilbert
Currie.
