5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Rabbi Roy A. Walter of Congregation Emanu El in |

6 | 6 | | Houston has faithfully served the spiritual needs of his community |

7 | 7 | | for almost four decades, and his genuine regard for the welfare of |

8 | 8 | | others has enriched the lives of countless people; and |

9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A Memphis native, Roy Walter graduated from Tulane |
---|
10 | 10 | | University and went on to earn a bachelor's degree, a master of |
---|
11 | 11 | | Hebrew Letters degree, and a doctor of divinity degree from Hebrew |
---|
12 | 12 | | Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion; he joined Emanu El |
---|
13 | 13 | | after his ordination in 1970, and he became senior rabbi eight years |
---|
14 | 14 | | later; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed leader is the coauthor of Gates of |
---|
16 | 16 | | Prayer for Young People, published by the Central Conference of |
---|
17 | 17 | | American Rabbis; he serves on the faculty of the University of St. |

18 | 18 | | Thomas under the auspices of the Jewish Chautauqua Society and is a |
---|
19 | 19 | | member of the Joint CCAR-Union of American Hebrew Congregations |

20 | 20 | | Commission on Social Action; moreover, he is a member of the |

21 | 21 | | Institute for Religion and Health in the Texas Medical Center and of |

22 | 22 | | the AIDS Foundation of Greater Houston; and |

23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Previously, Rabbi Walter served as president of |

24 | 24 | | Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston and of the Southwest |

25 | 25 | | Association of Reform Rabbis; in addition, he has served on the |

26 | 26 | | board of the Association of Reform Zionists of America, on the |
---|
27 | 27 | | Rabbinic Cabinet of the United Jewish Appeal, and on the CCAR |

28 | 28 | | executive board and liturgy committee; he is also a former member of |

29 | 29 | | the board of governors and board of rabbinic overseers of Hebrew |

31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Rabbi Walter enjoys the love |

32 | 32 | | and support of his wife, Linda Walter, their children, Benjamin, |

33 | 33 | | Michel, and Aaron, and their grandson, Ethan; and |

34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Rabbi Walter has demonstrated a wholehearted |

35 | 35 | | commitment to his congregation and to the wider community, and his |

36 | 36 | | faith, teaching, and many good works have been a source of profound |

38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
