| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Sandra Massie Hines of Houston has distinguished |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | herself as a dedicated professional, civic leader, and volunteer; |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Hines is the executive director of Junior |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Achievers, a nonprofit organization that works to promote jobs and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | healthy, drug-free living among youth; moreover, she is the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | honorary mayor of the Sunnyside community in Houston, where her |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | activism in behalf of people with substance abuse problems is well |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | known; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Devoted to numerous social justice causes, Ms. Hines |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | has championed the poor, the elderly, the homeless, and other |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | disenfranchised individuals and has worked with numerous city |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | officials in an effort to advance the issues dearest to her; through |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | the years, she has organized health and job fairs, town hall |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | meetings, and a range of social service programs; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Hines has been recognized for her outstanding |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | civic engagement by President George H. W. Bush, as well as by |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Governor Rick Perry, and in 1992, she was nominated for the Daily |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Point of Light Award; in addition, she was one of only 20 African |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | American women in Houston selected to represent the city in a |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | meeting with 100 women from various African countries; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, With a genuine concern for her fellow citizens, |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Sandra Massie Hines has given freely of her time and talents for the |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | benefit of others, and she is an inspiration to all those who are |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | privileged to know her; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature hereby honor Sandra Massie Hines on her many |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | significant contributions to the betterment of her community and |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success and |
|---|
