H.R. No. 2659 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Sylvia G. Rodriguez is retiring in 2009 after 11 years of exemplary service as a staff member for several Texas legislators; and WHEREAS, Born Sylvia Theresa Garza in 1928, Mrs. Rodriguez grew up in San Antonio amidst a large, loving family; at one point early in her life, she nearly followed one of her sisters, a recording artist and radio personality, into show business; having gained some theater experience in New York, Sylvia Garza had taken a screen test and won a movie contract; just before she was to start work, however, she returned home for a visit and met a young military pilot; throwing her other plans to the wind, she moved to Houston in 1950 and married her beloved aviator, David Garcia Rodriguez; and WHEREAS, Sylvia and David Rodriguez became the proud parents of six children and supported them wholeheartedly in their myriad activities; Mrs. Rodriguez also kept busy teaching crafts, tutoring elementary school students, and organizing an exercise class for stay-at-home mothers; at the request of the National Junior Tennis League, she coordinated a tennis program and saw the girls' team go on to win all-district and an invitation to play in the nationals in Washington, D.C.; and WHEREAS, After her husband passed away in 1974, Mrs. Rodriguez took a job in private industry; over the course of two decades, she served in various capacities and rose to the position of administrator; and WHEREAS, In 1999, Mrs. Rodriguez came out of retirement to become community liaison for newly elected state representative Rick Noriega, a post she held for 10 years; since Representative Noriega's retirement from the legislature, she has worked as community liaison in the offices of Representative Carol Alvarado and Senator Mario Gallegos; and WHEREAS, Following her second retirement, Mrs. Rodriguez plans to live in Buda, where she will be close to two of her children; she is looking forward to enjoying more time with her cherished family, which now includes 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; and WHEREAS, Sylvia Rodriguez has handled the responsibilities of her office with unfailing skill, helpfulness, and integrity, winning the admiration and affection of countless constituents, and it is indeed a privilege to commend her on a job well done; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Sylvia G. Rodriguez on the occasion of her retirement from her career with the Texas Legislature and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued happiness and fulfillment in the next exciting chapter of her life; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. Rodriguez as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
