44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, In May 2009, Sarah Viranda, Erika Reyna, and Rosario
66 Adriana Wilson are earning their Master of Public Administration
77 degrees from The University of Texas--Pan American; and
88 WHEREAS, The public administration program at UTPA offers
99 professional training for public service careers in local, state,
1010 and national governmental agencies and nonprofit organizations;
1111 the program involves the study and understanding of a variety of
1212 disciplines, including political science, law, psychology,
1313 economics, sociology, and business; and
1414 WHEREAS, Sarah Viranda earned her bachelor's degree in
1515 business technology at UTPA in 2005; a student leader and community
1616 volunteer, she has served as a representative for the Student
1717 Government Association, as president of Chi Alpha and the World
1818 Mandate Student Movement, and as the Mobile Go Center Coordinator
1919 of the Valley Outreach Center; named to the dean's list at UTPA and
2020 the honors list at South Texas College, she is also a member of the
2121 National Scholars Honor Society and the Association of Public
2222 Administrators; moreover, she has been recognized in the 2008-2009
2323 Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges as
2424 an outstanding campus leader, and she is a recipient of the Sister
2525 Carol Messina Endowed Scholarship award; and
2626 WHEREAS, Erika Reyna graduated with honors from La Joya
2727 Senior High School, where she was leader of the debate and
2828 extemporaneous speaking teams and treasurer of the National Honor
2929 Society; in 2005, she earned a bachelor's degree cum laude in
3030 political science and sociology from UTPA; she has previously been
3131 employed as a planning analyst with the Hidalgo County Budget
3232 Office and as a social worker with the Department of Family and
3333 Protective Services, and she currently works with Hidalgo County
3434 Judge J. D. Salinas III; she is also a member of the Pre-Law Society
3535 and the Association of Public Administrators; and
3636 WHEREAS, A native of McAllen, Rosario Adriana Wilson
3737 graduated from South Texas High School for Health Professions in
3838 1988; in college, she was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority and
3939 graduated with a bachelor's degree in government and sociology in
4040 1995; in graduate school, she was the first student chosen from the
4141 MPA program in 2006 to intern for the Government Accountability
4242 Office in Washington, D.C., and was coauthor on her team's
4343 congressional report; she also authored and donated two internship
4444 guides to the MPA program; a member of the Association of Public
4545 Administrators, she was inducted into the Golden Key International
4646 Honour Society in 2008, and in 2009 she successfully defended her
4747 thesis, We Know Not the Worth of Water Until the Well Runs Dry:
4848 Assessing Municipal Water Use for Fifteen Incorporated Cities in
4949 Hidalgo County, Texas for the Years 1984-2005; and
5050 WHEREAS, These three talented and hardworking young women
5151 have already distinguished themselves through their academic
5252 achievements, and they may indeed look with optimism toward the
5353 many opportunities that lie ahead; now, therefore, be it
5454 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
5555 Legislature hereby congratulate Sarah Viranda, Erika Reyna, and
5656 Rosario Adriana Wilson on their graduation from the public
5757 administration program at The University of Texas--Pan American and
5858 extend to them sincere best wishes for continued success and a
5959 bright future; and, be it further
6060 RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
6161 for Ms. Viranda, Ms. Reyna, and Ms. Wilson as an expression of high
6262 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
