| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Mary Benham is retiring from the Socorro Independent |

| 6 | 6 | | School District on June 30, 2009, drawing to a close a notable |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | career that has spanned three and a half decades; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A member of the Socorro ISD staff for the past 11 |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | years, Ms. Benham formerly served the district as assistant |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | superintendent for financial services; in that capacity, she |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | oversaw the growth of the district's fund balance from $10 million |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | to almost $45 million, a figure that ensures a better bond rating |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | and that enables the district to maintain competitive salaries and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | sustainable programs for schools; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Benham has held the post of interim |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | superintendent for the 2008-2009 school year, and during her tenure |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | the district's Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills scores have |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | greatly improved; it is likely that 11 schools will be rated |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Exemplary, up from 3 a year ago; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Throughout her distinguished career with the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Socorro ISD, Ms. Benham has earned the admiration of her fellow |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | administrators as well as the respect of teachers, students, and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | parents, and she may indeed take great pride in her achievements as |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | she embarks on the next exciting chapter of her life; now, |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | therefore, be it |

| 26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Mary Benham on the occasion of her |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | retirement from the Socorro Independent School District and extend |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | to her sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; |
