| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The death of Robert Mueller of Taylor on September |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | 6, 2008, at the age of 69, brought great sadness to his family, |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | friends, and many admirers across the Lone Star State and beyond; |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born in 1939, Mr. Mueller began working in his |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | father's grocery store in Taylor at the age of eight; in 1949, his |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | father opened Louie Mueller Barbecue, which moved to its present |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | location on Second Street a decade later; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The captain of his high school football and track |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | teams, Bobby Mueller graduated in 1957 and entered Texas Christian |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | University; he joined the U.S. Army in 1963 and served in Korea |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | before returning to Taylor two years later to work for the family |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | business; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, When his father retired in 1974, Bobby Mueller took |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | over the restaurant, and during the next 30 years he turned it into |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | a Texas culinary legend; often rising at four in the morning to |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | prepare the day's meats and side dishes from scratch, he regularly |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | worked a 90-hour week; at one point he calculated that he had spent |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | more than 160,000 hours at the restaurant; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Mueller's dedication to the art of barbecue |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | earned him nationwide recognition; in Texas Monthly's annual |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | statewide ranking of barbecue establishments, Louie Mueller |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Barbecue placed in the top five on three different occasions; |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | moreover, in 2006, the restaurant won the prestigious James Beard |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Foundation Award; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Bobby Mueller helped build his family's business |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | into an iconic landmark; though he appreciated the many accolades |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | his restaurant garnered, this hardworking and humble Texan took |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | even greater pleasure in the approval he received from thousands of |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | customers over the years; he also found immense pleasure in |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | spending time with his loved ones, especially his four |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | grandchildren, and he has left behind a legacy to treasure for all |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | those who held him dear; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Robert Mueller and |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | Patricia; to his children, Wayne, John, and LeAnn; to his |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | grandchildren, Robert, Johnson, Andrew, and Erica; and to his other |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | relatives and friends; and, be it further |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

| 45 | 45 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|---|
| 46 | 46 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Bobby |
