44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The death of Robert Mueller of Taylor on September
66 6, 2008, at the age of 69, brought great sadness to his family,
77 friends, and many admirers across the Lone Star State and beyond;
88 and
99 WHEREAS, Born in 1939, Mr. Mueller began working in his
1010 father's grocery store in Taylor at the age of eight; in 1949, his
1111 father opened Louie Mueller Barbecue, which moved to its present
1212 location on Second Street a decade later; and
1313 WHEREAS, The captain of his high school football and track
1414 teams, Bobby Mueller graduated in 1957 and entered Texas Christian
1515 University; he joined the U.S. Army in 1963 and served in Korea
1616 before returning to Taylor two years later to work for the family
1717 business; and
1818 WHEREAS, When his father retired in 1974, Bobby Mueller took
1919 over the restaurant, and during the next 30 years he turned it into
2020 a Texas culinary legend; often rising at four in the morning to
2121 prepare the day's meats and side dishes from scratch, he regularly
2222 worked a 90-hour week; at one point he calculated that he had spent
2323 more than 160,000 hours at the restaurant; and
2424 WHEREAS, Mr. Mueller's dedication to the art of barbecue
2525 earned him nationwide recognition; in Texas Monthly's annual
2626 statewide ranking of barbecue establishments, Louie Mueller
2727 Barbecue placed in the top five on three different occasions;
2828 moreover, in 2006, the restaurant won the prestigious James Beard
2929 Foundation Award; and
3030 WHEREAS, Bobby Mueller helped build his family's business
3131 into an iconic landmark; though he appreciated the many accolades
3232 his restaurant garnered, this hardworking and humble Texan took
3333 even greater pleasure in the approval he received from thousands of
3434 customers over the years; he also found immense pleasure in
3535 spending time with his loved ones, especially his four
3636 grandchildren, and he has left behind a legacy to treasure for all
3737 those who held him dear; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3939 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Robert Mueller and
4040 extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife,
4141 Patricia; to his children, Wayne, John, and LeAnn; to his
4242 grandchildren, Robert, Johnson, Andrew, and Erica; and to his other
4343 relatives and friends; and, be it further
4444 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4545 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4646 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Bobby
4747 Mueller.
