| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A full and purposeful life came to an end on |

| 6 | 6 | | September 20, 2008, with the passing of Samuel Cavness of Marathon |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | at the age of 90; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born to Will and Dolly Cavness in Mason County on |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | June 8, 1918, Sam Cavness answered his nation's call to duty during |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | World War II and served as the head of a cavalry unit gun crew in the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | South Pacific theater; for his courageous and dedicated service, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Mr. Cavness was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Good Conduct Medal, four bronze stars, the Philippine Liberation |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Ribbon with two bronze stars, and the American Defense Service |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Medal; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Cavness earned his living in the ranching |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | business throughout his adult life, working on the Dove Mountain |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Ranch for 32 years, at Black Mesa Ranch for 7 years, and on the Guy |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Combs Ranch for 8 years; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, He married the former Patsy Ruth Granger on |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | September 2, 1946, and the couple were blessed with four sons; they |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | also had the privilege of welcoming 12 grandchildren and 9 |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | great-grandchildren into their family during more than six decades |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | of marriage; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Sam Cavness bravely served his nation in a time of |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | war and returned home to establish a life filled with joyful times |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | and meaningful accomplishments, and he will be fondly remembered by |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | all those fortunate enough to know him; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Samuel Cavness and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Patsy Cavness; to his sons, Toby, Leo, Sammy and his wife, Dara, and |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Robert and his wife, Paula; to his grandchildren, Amy Hardy, Amber |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Decker, and Buddy, Matt, Cody, Joe, Cal, Chet, Clay, Richard, |
