55 WHEREAS, Residents of Balch Springs are gathering at the
66 State Capitol on March 4, 2009, to gain further insight into the
77 workings of state government; and
88 WHEREAS, This North Texas community has a fascinating history
99 that can be traced back to the late 19th century, when John M. Balch
1010 first settled the area; according to local legend, the Balch family
1111 made the natural springs available as a meeting place and as a
1212 communal water source for their neighbors; and
1313 WHEREAS, In 1885, Dallas County established the region's
1414 first school; seven decades later, citizens voted to incorporate,
1515 and since that time, the population has grown to nearly 20,000; and
1616 WHEREAS, With the 81st Legislative Session well under way,
1717 the Capitol Complex is a source of great activity, offering
1818 visiting Balch Springs residents an excellent opportunity to see
1919 state government in action and to form a stronger partnership with
2020 their state legislators; now, therefore, be it
2121 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2222 Legislature hereby recognize March 4, 2009, as Balch Springs State
2323 Government Day at the State Capitol and extend best wishes to the
2424 members of the delegation for an enjoyable and memorable visit to
2525 Austin.
